[Underlying Logic Observation Notes 01] The World’s Underlying Logic Is Crueler Than You Think

2026-02-28 19 mins read

This is the first installment of the Underlying Logic Observation Notes series. From a technologist’s perspective, it dissects the core laws of global operation, shatters the common misconception that "the world is fair", and helps you build a more realistic and rational macro cognitive framework. It urges you to abandon unrealistic illusions, stay sober amid the changing times, and make more rational choices.

I. The World’s Rules Never Warn You Before They Change

Change in the world is never an abrupt outburst, but a silent collapse and restructuring. It is like an undercurrent beneath a glacier, surging endlessly in unnoticeable corners, quietly accumulating power enough to subvert inherent perceptions. Until one day, when you follow the old path out of habit, you suddenly realize: the rules you once relied on for survival, the order you firmly believed in, and the experience you held as gospel have all been completely rewritten in silence.

Over the past five to ten years, the deeper we observe the volatile international situation, the more we can feel an invisible yet oppressive tension. The verbal sparring at the trade negotiation table masks the quiet shift and restructuring of the global industrial chain; the gentle diplomacy in diplomatic rhetoric hides the fierce game for resource control among major powers. Even the price fluctuations of daily consumer goods, access restrictions on tech products, and shifts in cross-border capital flows all hint at the iteration of underlying logic—only most people fail to notice.

We naively assume the world still operates by the old script: globalization is an irreversible trend, win-win cooperation a universal consensus, and equality before the rules an unquestionable principle. But the cruel reality is that the underlying structure of the global order has long begun its restructuring. Those details we ignored, signals we underestimated, and trends we misinterpreted eventually converge into key variables that rewrite the rules of the game, leaving those clinging to old perceptions far behind.

What truly determines the direction of the times is never the wordplay in news headlines, nor the grand narratives from experts and scholars, but the direction of power flow behind the news—who is losing power, who is accumulating it, who is transferring it, and who is locking it in. This invisible, intangible yet omnipresent power is the underlying logic that cuts through appearances and determines life and death. It never clamors, yet holds absolute power to overwhelm all superficialities. Only by understanding it can you stand firm in the tide of the times.

II. The Law of the Jungle Never Disappeared—it Just Changed Its Skin

Many stubbornly believe that after entering a civilized society, the "law of the jungle" has faded into history, and the brutal logic of the strong preying on the weak has long been replaced by rules, morality and laws. But the truth is far crueler than we think: the jungle never disappeared. It merely shed its primitive fangs and fur, and put on a more hidden, sophisticated and deceptive modern coat, continuing its essence in a more advanced form.

In the primitive jungle, the contest of power was naked physical confrontation and tooth-and-claw combat, with victory and defeat crystal clear. In the modern world’s jungle, however, success or failure has long transcended a one-dimensional contest of hard power, evolving into a multi-dimensional, systematic and in-depth game of power systems. The core of today’s law of the jungle is a comprehensive contest in five dimensions, none of which can be missing:

  1. Technological Discourse Power: It is by no means simply possessing technology, but holding the absolute power to define technical standards, block technological paths, and monopolize technical patents. Just like lithography machines in semiconductors, core algorithms in AI, and the right to set standards in communications—controlling these means holding the lifeline of related industries.
  2. Supply Chain Control Power: It is not passively participating in the industrial chain division of labor, but occupying core nodes and key links of the industrial chain, with the ability to cut, restructure or dominate the chain at any time. For example, the purification and processing of rare earths, energy transportation channels, and the exclusive production of key components all embody the core of supply chain control power.
  3. Key Waterways and Resource Territories: Strategic choke points such as the Malacca Strait, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Panama Canal directly determine the safety and efficiency of global cargo transportation. The reserves and mining rights of strategic resources such as lithium, cobalt and nickel are the core lifeline of modern industrial development, and their control is directly linked to a country’s long-term development.
  4. Narrative Definition Power: Defining "justice", "rationality" and "progress" with a self-consistent logical system, and packaging one’s own interests as a global consensus through public opinion propaganda, cultural output and rule-making, putting opponents in a passive position morally and in public opinion. This is an invisible yet highly penetrating soft power, whose lethality is no less than hard power.
  5. Shock Resilience: The ability to resist risks in the face of sudden shocks such as external sanctions, natural disasters and geopolitical conflicts, which is corely reflected in food self-sufficiency rate, energy independence, integrity of the industrial system, and social stability. The stronger the resilience, the higher the probability of survival in the jungle game.

These five dimensions form the foundation of survival in the modern jungle, and directly determine the future of a country, an organization, and even an ordinary person. The law of the modern jungle is no longer "might makes right", but "whoever has a more robust system, a more far-reaching layout, stronger risk resistance, and greater discourse power will survive, thrive, and hold dominance". The jungle never left—it just became more demanding of cognitive depth, more prominent of the importance of sobriety, and its cruelty more hidden.

III. The Underlying Logic of the Future World: Three Unbreakable Iron Laws

1. Power Determines Whether Rules Take Effect

We are used to believing in "reason above all else", and firmly hold that international law and rules are the impartial yardsticks maintaining the global order. But the cold reality is: rules without power as a backing are nothing more than illusory moral appeals; reason without strength to endorse it is ultimately just a spiritual shackle for self-consolation. International law is not worthless, but the boundary of its effectiveness is always defined by "enforcement power"—military deterrence, economic control, technological discourse power, and alliance cohesion. These hard powers are the core confidence for rules to be implemented and to constrain others.

The world does not operate by the logic of "right and wrong", but follows the law of "power structure". The strong make the rules and use them to safeguard their own interests; the middle adapt to the rules and seek development in the gaps; the weak are governed by the rules and become victims of the rule game. This is not a regression of civilization, but an underlying logic that runs through human history. Even as the coat of civilization becomes thicker, this essence never changes. When the global balance of power quietly reverses, the restructuring of rules will come as scheduled—irrelevant to moral judgment, only about the game of strength.

2. Geopolitics Is the Skeleton of Destiny

The rubble of Syria, the flames of war in Ukraine, the human tragedy in Gaza... Looking at the turbulent places around the world, we can easily find a commonality: their suffering is never an inevitable result of mere "weakness". If judged only by strength, many weaker countries than them live in peace. The core answer lies in their unchangeable geopolitical location—they are unfortunately standing on the "fault lines" of global geopolitical games, becoming the forefront of major power contests.

Geopolitical location is a country’s innate genetic code, which is deeply imprinted in its security environment, development space, resource endowments and even destiny. Countries caught in the cracks of major power games, even if they have certain strength, are often involuntarily drawn into disputes and become victims of power games. Countries with the advantage of a geopolitical hub, even with a modest starting point, can quickly seize development opportunities and rank among the world’s powerful nations by virtue of the unique dividends of their location. The cruelty of location lies in its irreplaceability—strength can be gradually accumulated through acquired efforts, but geopolitical location is destined from birth and cannot be changed.

3. Technology Is the New Language of Power

Looking back at history, the language of power has undergone several iterations: land and population in ancient times, military and wealth in modern times. As we step into the future, the core language of power will inevitably be technology. Future global competition has long bid farewell to the crude hard confrontation of tank vs. tank and warship vs. warship, and turned to precise "dimension reduction strikes" in core technological fields, and the ultimate contest for technical standards and discourse power. Whoever seizes the high ground of technology will occupy a dominant position in the global power structure; whoever is excluded from the core technological system is doomed to be abandoned by the tide of the times.

These core technological fields jointly form the foundation of future power, and each is a "survival tool" in the modern jungle:

  • AI and Computing Power: As the core engine of all future fields, it directly determines a country’s decision-making efficiency, data security and innovation capability, and is the "brain center" of major power games.
  • Semiconductors: Hailed as the "grain of industry", without the support of advanced chips, all modern industrial systems will fall into paralysis and lose their operational capacity.
  • Energy Technology: Technologies such as photovoltaic, wind power, energy storage and controllable nuclear fusion are directly related to a country’s energy independence, environmental sustainability and development lifeline.
  • Biotechnology: Breakthroughs in gene editing, vaccine research and development, biomedicine and other fields are not only related to national health and life safety, but also contain enormous potential to reshape the future.
  • Strategic Resources: Key raw materials such as rare earths, lithium, cobalt and nickel are the "industrial blood" of core fields such as new energy, semiconductors and military industry, and their control directly determines industrial chain security.
  • Waterways and Network Channels: They are both the lifeline of cargo transportation in the physical world and the hub of information transmission in the digital world. Dual control means dual strategic advantages.

Technology has long transcended its attribute as a "tool" and become the embodiment of power itself. In the modern jungle, the gap in technological strength is essentially a gap in survival capability; the contest for technological discourse power is the contest for the right to survive in the future. Mastering core technology means having the confidence to define rules and dominate the pattern; losing technological advantages means being passive and controlled by others, becoming a bystander of the times.

IV. As a Chinese Technologist, What I See as the Truth of the Times

In this critical era of global systemic restructuring, none of us are bystanders, but firsthand participants; not passive bearers, but active problem-solvers. As a practitioner who has been deeply engaged in the technical field for many years, I can perceive more clearly than ordinary people: we are standing at a historical turning point. The restructuring of the global order, the reshaping of industrial chains, the heightening of technological barriers, and the intensification of geopolitical games are not short-term fluctuations, but long-term irreversible trends. This is not an alarmist talk, but an unavoidable truth of the times that is happening right now.

In this unprecedented great change in a century, China’s rise is by no means accidental luck, but an inevitable result of the superposition of structural advantages. Such structural advantages are not outstanding performance in a single field, but multi-dimensional, systematic comprehensive strength, corely reflected in four key aspects:

  1. A Complete Industrial System: China is the only country in the world with all industrial categories in the UN Industrial Classification, forming a closed-loop industrial chain ecosystem from upstream raw material mining and midstream component processing to downstream end-product manufacturing. This integrity endows it with extremely strong self-regulation and substitution capabilities in the face of external sanctions and shocks, with far greater risk resilience than other countries.
  2. Huge Scientific and Technological Investment: China’s R&D expenditure has ranked second in the world for consecutive years, with the largest number of R&D personnel globally. It has achieved leapfrog breakthroughs from following to running side by side and even leading in many key fields such as AI, photovoltaic, new energy vehicles, 5G communications and UHV power transmission. Sustained high-intensity investment provides solid financial and talent support for technological innovation, and lays the foundation for solving "bottleneck" technical problems.
  3. A Stable Institutional Environment: China has the institutional advantage of pooling resources to accomplish major tasks. It can coordinate national resources in tackling key core technologies, laying out strategic resources, ensuring industrial chain security, and building major infrastructure, breaking free from the constraints of short-term interests and focusing on long-term strategic goals. This advantage has become increasingly prominent in global competition.
  4. Globalized Supply Chain Layout: Through international cooperation initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative, China is deeply integrated into the global industrial, supply and value chains. It not only guarantees its own resource supply and market space, but also provides new impetus for global development through technology export and production capacity cooperation, gradually building a win-win global cooperation network.

These advantages are not empty slogans, but the key nodes for us to stand firm and seize the initiative in the global jungle game, and the core confidence for us to resist external risks and achieve long-term development. As Chinese technologists, every technological breakthrough we make, every patent we innovate, every process optimization we implement, and every moment of perseverance and dedication are all contributing to the country’s power system. In this cruel modern jungle, we are striving for a broader living space and development initiative for ourselves, for the country, and for the nation.

V. Understanding the Jungle Is to Live More Soberly in It

My continuous attention to the international situation and in-depth research on underlying logic are by no means to fall into meaningless anxiety, to amplify panic, or even to advocate confrontation and conflict. On the contrary, the reason I am persistent in understanding the underlying logic of this world is to find my own "stable anchor" in this rapidly changing and uncertain era: cognitive stability, not being confused by appearances; directional stability, not being swept away by the tide; and behavioral stability, not being swayed by impetuosity.

The world is changing, the rules are changing, the power structure is changing, and the logic of survival is also changing. If we still use past experience to meet future challenges, cover up the cruelty of reality with illusory beauty, and escape the laws of the jungle with a fluke mentality, we will ultimately be ruthlessly eliminated by the tide of the times. The world is upgrading, and our cognition, capabilities and vision must be upgraded in sync; the jungle is evolving, and our survival wisdom, pressure resistance and problem-solving thinking must evolve with it.

Acknowledging the existence of the law of the jungle is not surrendering to cruelty, but revering reality; understanding the cruelty of underlying logic is not becoming cold and selfish, but learning to make choices more rationally and soberly. In the modern jungle, courage is certainly important—it allows you to dare to charge in difficult times. But sobriety is far more important than courage: it lets you see the direction clearly, avoid traps, see through disguises, and always maintain strategic resolve in the volatile game; it lets you find your position accurately, focus on the core, accumulate strength for a big takeoff, and seize the opportunities that belong to you in the era of change. Courage is the strength to move forward, but sobriety is the fundamental prerequisite for surviving and thriving.

May we all penetrate the fog of appearances and see the underlying logic of the world clearly; may we all keep our original aspirations amid changes, stay sober amid cruelty, and achieve growth amid upgrading; may we all live in harmony, strength and dignity in this complex modern jungle.
